Did You Know April is National STD Awareness Month?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a Talk. Test. Treat. campaign this month to help support communities as they raise awareness about Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs), also referred to as Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs). Campaigns are available for individuals and providers that include learning about what STDs are, their impact on lives; and help to understand why it's important to prevent, test for, and treat STDs.

According to the CDC, from 2013 2017 the surge of STDs endangered the health of too many people in the United States (U.S.):

  • Syphilis cases nearly doubled.
  • Gonorrhea cases increased by 67 percent.
  • Chlamydia cases remained at record highs.

Given this data, the CDC believes STD Awareness Month is a timely reminder to continue to raise awareness about STDs, take action to mitigate the increase of STDs in the U.S. and reduce STD-related stigma, fear, and discrimination.
