To date, OCR has resolved 307,399 cases, many of which resulted in changes to privacy practices and corrective actions.

In addition, 129 cases were settled or penalties were imposed, equaling a total of $133,578,772.00.

The most common allegations of violations involve impermissible uses and disclosures of protected health information, lack of safeguards for health information, lack of access to health information, and use or disclosure of more than the minimum necessary health information.

In instances where the alleged activity does not violate HIPAA Rules, the complaint is not eligible for enforcement.

Referrals to the Department of Justice are made for cases involving the knowing disclosure or obtaining of protected information.
